International Women’s Day: Women Shaping the Future of Telecommunications

08/03/26

On International Women’s Day, ISTEL 3000 traditionally recognizes the contribution of women to the development of telecommunications — a strategic industry that ensures connectivity, digital resilience, and technological progress.

Telecommunications is a complex engineering ecosystem involving network protocols, routing algorithms, wireless technologies, fiber-optic data transmission systems, and cybersecurity solutions. At the core of many of these technologies are scientific and engineering breakthroughs created or significantly advanced by women.

  • Hedy Lamarr — co-inventor of frequency-hopping spread spectrum technology. This concept became the foundation for modern wireless communication standards, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and mobile networks, enabling reliable and secure signal transmission.

  • Radia Perlman — the engineer who developed the Spanning Tree Protocol (STP) algorithm. This innovation ensured the stability and scalability of Ethernet networks and became one of the key building blocks of the global Internet infrastructure.

  • Shirley Ann Jackson — a theoretical physicist whose fundamental research contributed to the development of telecommunications technologies that later formed the basis for fiber-optic systems, caller ID technology, and other modern communication solutions.

These innovations are not merely part of scientific history. They form the foundation of technologies that are now used by telecommunications operators, public institutions, and corporate customers worldwide.

Today, women continue to play a strategic role in the industry — from designing transport and IP networks to implementing 5G solutions, advancing cybersecurity systems, and integrating digital platforms.

We extend our sincere appreciation to all women — engineers, researchers, leaders, project managers, and analysts — for your expertise, responsibility, and strategic vision.

Happy International Women’s Day!

May your ideas continue to shape the future of technology and communications.

Sincerely,

The ISTEL 3000 Team
