Video Walls for Control Centres: How Modern Visualisation Systems Enhance Critical Infrastructure Management

The digital transformation of control centres now extends far beyond the modernisation of individual information systems. Large-format visualisation systems are becoming a key component of modern control infrastructure, enabling operators to maintain a comprehensive overview of ongoing events and respond promptly to any changes.


This approach was implemented during the modernisation of the RNC Dragomelj Regional Traffic Management Centre in Slovenia. Kontron installed one of the largest video walls used in a European control centre: a 15.9 × 3.7 metre system comprising 60 projection modules equipped with laser light sources.


However, the main value of this project lies not in the scale of the video wall itself, but in the way the control centre’s operations are organised.


A modern video wall serves as a centralised visualisation platform that allows operators to receive and analyse information from multiple systems simultaneously.


A single display can show:

  • infrastructure monitoring data;

  • live video feeds from surveillance systems;

  • accident and incident alerts;

  • equipment status information;

  • data from operational control and process management systems;

  • information required for coordination with other emergency response services.


Consolidating information in one visual environment significantly reduces the time required to assess a situation, minimises the risk of overlooking critical data and enables faster operational decision-making.


For Ukraine, such technologies are relevant primarily not for the management of road tunnels, but for the control centres of critical infrastructure operators, where the continuous monitoring of technological processes is essential to maintaining stable operations.


This primarily applies to:

  • railway infrastructure;

  • energy companies;

  • telecommunications operators;

  • situation centres operated by public authorities;

  • critical infrastructure organisations responsible for the uninterrupted provision of essential services.


The importance of such centres increases considerably during wartime. Operators must simultaneously monitor dozens of information streams, quickly detect deviations in system performance, coordinate the activities of different services and ensure a rapid response to incidents.


A centralised visualisation system makes it possible to create a unified information environment in which all critical data is available in real time.


The use of large-format video walls in control centres enables organisations to:

  • centralise the display of information from multiple information systems;

  • improve operators’ situational awareness;

  • reduce response times during accidents and emergencies;

  • improve coordination between control, emergency response and maintenance teams;

  • enhance the reliability of mission-critical technological process management.


Such solutions are becoming an essential component of modern control centres, where the speed of information analysis directly affects safety, infrastructure continuity and the effectiveness of decision-making.
